Wakasa Lacquer – A Precious Tradition
Nestled along the shores of the Sea of Japan, the city of Obama is now responsible for approximately 90% of all Japanese chopstick production.
Originating in the early Edo period, the Wakasa-nuri technique draws inspiration from the ocean floor: eggshells, mother-of-pearl, pine needles, and rapeseed seeds are inlaid into the lacquer to create deep, luminous patterns. Through a subtle play of layering—colored lacquers, gold leaf, and urethane finishes, these chopsticks become simultaneously durable, elegant, and unique.
